What initial information is required for the trenching/excavation permit application?

The initial information required includes the trade, excavation supervisor's name, a description of the trench/excavation works (including depth and size), and the location of the trench/excavation. The person completing the form must also provide their signature.

What safety checks must be completed before starting excavation work?

Before starting excavation, ensure that Before You Dig Australia asset location plans are obtained, all underground services are located and marked, and any in-ground services are located by hand excavation (potholing). Check for the presence of overhead powerlines and assess whether a qualified spotter/safety observer is required. Evaluate the need for a permit from an asset owner and address traffic management, undermining of adjoining structures, and potential flooding.

How should ground conditions and support systems be assessed?

Assess the nature of the ground (soil, rock, sand, clay, wet, or dry) and determine shoring and ground support requirements. Inspect ground conditions within the zone of influence for any fretting, slipping, slumping, or ground swelling before anyone enters the excavation. Ensure the shoring, battering, trench walls, shield, and ground support system comply with the geotechnical report or engineer design requirements.

What additional safety measures must be documented?

Document hazards and control measures associated with trenching/excavation in a safe work method statement (SWMS), including rescue procedures. Ensure safe access and egress, assess fall hazards for work over two meters deep, secure the excavation from public access, and verify that any contaminated soil hazards are addressed in the SWMS.‍
