How BuildPass is Shaping the Future of Construction Tech - Million Dollar Days Podcast
How BuildPass is shaping the future of construction tech — as told on the Million Dollar Days Podcast
If you’ve ever wondered how a background in civil engineering, a few cold calls, and a timely global pandemic could spark one of the most innovative tools in construction tech, Matt Perrott’s journey with BuildPass is the blueprint.
In a recent episode of the Million Dollar Days Podcast, Matt, CEO & Co-founder of BuildPass, sat down with Robby Choucair & George Passas for an open, energetic chat on startups, site safety, and the future of AI in construction. Here’s what stood out.

From skyscraper dreams to startups
Matt’s origin story isn’t your typical SaaS-founder tale. He once dreamed of building skyscrapers, until a uni project-turned-failed tech startup steered him from civil engineering into software.
Why BuildPass exists
The spark for BuildPass came from a recurring frustration: fragmented, outdated, and overly complex tools on construction sites. Site managers were juggling five apps to get one job done. The BuildPass mission? Create one simple, powerful platform to manage every key on-site workflow — from safety and inductions to site logs and scheduling.
Covid, QR codes, and the wedge into the market
Covid didn’t just change public health protocols — it also changed user behaviour. Matt shares how builders became more open to QR code sign-ins and remote-friendly processes, providing the perfect entry point for BuildPass.
What started as a QR code induction tool has now grown into a full site operations platform used by over 600 builders and 150,000 workers across Australia, New Zealand and the US.
Keeping construction safe (and simple)
One story hit hard: a notifiable incident on a job site where a concrete boom malfunctioned. Thanks to BuildPass, every piece of required documentation — from inductions to plant checks — was ready to go. A potential fine was avoided, and more importantly, the team proved they were running a safe site.
This is the stuff that makes BuildPass invaluable: simple workflows, peace of mind, and a safer industry.
Why Matt Isn’t bothered by competitor criticism
Yes, BuildPass was founded by tech guys — not builders. And yes, that’s a good thing. As Matt puts it: you wouldn’t hire a builder to fix your car. You’d hire a mechanic. So BuildPass builds top-tier tech, and partners with construction and safety experts to get it right.
AI: the Next evolution
Matt and the BuildPass team aren’t just building tools for today’s sites. They’re building the future. With AI already embedded into many features — like automatic documentation and safety workflows — they’re also launching Supersite, a “Snapchat for construction sites” that turns voice notes and photos into actionable tasks and reports.
As AI continues to evolve, Matt’s vision is clear: AI agents will help site managers work faster, smarter, and safer.
Going global: why the U.S. is next
With only 3% of the Australian market tapped, why is BuildPass expanding to the U.S.? Because timing matters. With AI transforming the way construction operates, Matt sees an opportunity to lead — not follow — in the world’s biggest construction market.
